When discussing morality and whats right and whats wrong, I always (always) love to look at the Old Testament.
"If we didn't have Gods divine guidance, we'd be murderous thugs!"
Murderous thugs indeed, and who to look to for an example of a 'murderous thug' then God himself! Back to my statement on looking to the Old Testament, God sanctions everything that we find wrong and immoral.
The Old Testament gives you all the know-how on Slavery, beating your slave, Rape and so forth.
[Exodus 21:20-21 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.]
So don't beat the slave....oh wait, I'm all clear to beat him? Just can't kill him or have him die within a few days from the wounds. Not only does this allow inhumane violence, but it also condones slavery. You'll find many stories in the Old Testament of God having his "People" (He changes his choice of people from time to time, its Gods will!) conquer neighboring tribes, taking the women, and enslaving the men.
"But that was the OLD Testament, we know that all that stuff was wrong!"
Ahhh really? So the whole enslaving of african americans and other races after the New Testament was just a fluke? Jesus never said slavery was a no-no, and anyone else hear the argument
"Slavery though was different back then! It was more of a 'Social Status'!"
This seems to me as self conflicting statement. Slavery is slavery, you're FORCED to do manual/Sexual work. you're allowed to be BEATEN, and humiliated. No God with half the wits of a moron would see this as morally right....of course, believers of the bible think its alright in this sense soo, I guess I take that Moron metaphor back, wouldn't want to insult Morons.
Getting away from my more insulting side of the rant, people even after the New Testament still used laws from the Old Testament (By the way: Did you know that there are more then 10 commandments? Try 613! I'd be very unhappy to memorize all those). Taking a look at history, slavery was a constant (Christians/Catholics and sub sects of both believing White was the superior color) and people backed this up with the Bible. Obviously God and Jesus had no issues here.
Taking my argument above, let me know what you think, wether you're an atheist or theist, I'd love to read your views!
